" Quite Apart "
by Suzán Jiván
Mom & Mom-
Mom Suzán
Quite apart from the ferocity
of personal histories
not considered "worthy"
yet moved by words
of young girls
during overland journeys
happy and carefree
dancing beside campfires
via violins' playing
running races making swings
throughout crossings
transplanting of families
wagon parties drawn by oxen
to far-off Oregon
bootstraps straw hats
our future rests
with checking
out the feathers
of bird aesthetics
when whales
weren't always
so immense
as babies in bassinets
with striking exceptions
across continents
being lured to frozen deserts
wind-blown grit
sculpting valley rims
footprints of scientists
subcontinents splitting
due to continental drift
left floating in pools
of salty liquid
planetary histories
of filter-fed gigantism
bowhead and fin
binging behemoths
marine creatures'
early beginnings
beneath ice sheets
yielding tremendously
big childrens'
chalk drawings
all along poured
concrete sidewalks
as glamorous gigs
for many a youngsters'
be wonderment
plus befuddlements
never begrudged...
